Event Rules

An addendum to these rules, specific to the 2021 Virtual NJ Envirothon, will be posted soon. Click here to learn more about this year's virtual event...

January 2015
TEAM SIGN-UP AND ELIGIBILITY
  • Students in grades 9-12 are eligible.
  • Students must wear Envirothon T-shirts during the event.
  • Team participants should not wear any clothing which contains a school name, logo or would not meet your school's dress code.
  • Each team must consist of five (5) members from the same school or organization. One alternate is permitted to prepare with the team, but cannot attend as a 6th member during the actual event. Any substitution of alternates for regular team members needs to be made before arrival to the Envirothon.
  • Schools may submit a registration form for a second team. A waiting list will be created and if there is space after the registration deadline, your school will be notified about entering the second team.

EVENT DAY
  • Transportation to the event is the responsibility of each participating team.
  • Turn in presentation cards to the proctor at Registration prior to the start of the Envirothon.
  • Team advisors are prohibited from accompanying their team during any part of the competition. (This includes lunch.)
  • The lunch break is still part of the Envirothon, no studying or use of other materials is permitted. All rules still apply during the lunch break.
  • In the event of a tied score, the team with the highest score in the team presentation portion will be declared the winner. Decisions of the contest judges are final.

DISQUALIFICATION
  • Any infraction of the New Jersey Envirothon Rules can result in disqualification and dismissal from the event and host site.
TESTING STATIONS
  • Test questions may cover any information in the study guide and suggested resource materials like web materials and links.
  • The contest will consist of hands-on questions along with some true/false, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks.
  • There will be 30 minutes at each resource Station (15 minutes hands-on and 15 minutes written). Team presentations will last 10 minutes.
  • Teams will have 5 minutes from the time that the air horn sounds once to get to their next station. The air horn will sound twice when teams should be at the next station on the itinerary. Proceed to each station as quickly as possible. Ask staff if you are uncertain of where you should be.
  • Any concerns related to testing should be brought to the immediate attention of a staff member or session proctor. Teams must submit written appeals to the Envirothon Coordinator within 15 minutes of the completion of the final testing station. The Appeals Committee will review these appeals and proper action will be taken if necessary. All decisions of the Appeals Committee are final.

  • Teams may only carry this itinerary, writing tools, and water bottles during the event.
  • Teams will not be permitted to carry any items not provided to them at the time of registration. This includes, but is not limited to, backpacks, cell phones, calculators, battery or solar powered equipment or any other electronic devices during the competition.
